Apocalypse Crossing
(This review contains
spoilers!)
I think my favourite part of this
anime so far is how it juggles clashing genres and themes so perfectly. This
episode was able to combine both happy and sad storylines in a way that the
overall feel of the show never got lost or off track.
The underlying theme this week is “was
the world always like this?” While this question is never actually posed until
the very end of the episodes, both the first and third stories act as catalysts
to cause Chi and Yuu to question what exactly happened to the world. I
personally really hope we learn more about the people that came before and why
they’re gone.
The first segment, “House”, did a
fantastic job in utilizing the darker aspects of the story. Seeing Chi and Yuu
imagine their dream house was both charming and depressing, especially when
they got lost in their imaginations thinking about what their life could be
like. Even better was the last segment, “Sound of Rain”, where they used rain
and cans to discover music and create a song. “Sound of Rain” might be my new
favourite segment they’ve ever done.
Unfortunately, the middle segment of “Nap”
feels more like a time-waster in between the two. It’s just a bunch of weird
and wacky imagery Chi dreams about with no real rhyme or reason. It just feels
kind of boring to watch.
Overall, this was another fantastic
episode of Girls’ Last Tour. I’m
continually impressed by the show’s ability to mix and match the depressing
bleakness of a post-apocalyptic world with the cutesy fun we’ve come to love
from slice of life anime. If you haven’t given it a try yet, what’re you
waiting for?
FINAL SCORE
8/10
Great
