Being meguca is suffering
(This review contains
spoilers!)
I’m glad that Magical Girl Raising
Project decided to cut the crap and announce Nemurin’s death to everyone right
away. That way we can move forward with the plot right away without having a “hey
guys what’s happening to the loser magical girls” storyline for half the show.
I’m a little disappointed that Nemurin wasn’t removed from the opening and
ending a la Studio Lerche’s own Gakkou Gurashi, but it ultimately doesn’t
really matter.
Shortly after, a new update introduces
a way to transfer candies between girls, leading the magical girl mafia to
conduct a harebrained scheme to rob Snow White blind, effectively killing her
off. Wow, that’s a sentence I never thought I’d write. Anime is weird.
The majority of the episode focuses on
the mafia group, consisting of a self-absorbed leader, Swim Swim, who is
devoted to the cause, two twin angels who want to become popular in the game,
and Tama, the dog suit girl who is beyond adorable. Tama is probably my
favourite character so far, but that probably means she’s gonna bite the dust
at some point.
It is kind of frustrating that most of
the other characters are more interesting than Snow White. She’s our main protagonist,
but all she seems to have done for the past 2 episodes is sit on that radio
tower, talk to La Pucelle, and log into the chatroom every now and then. Like I
said last week, the characters maintain that she’s the hardest working and most
rewarded of all of them, despite the fact that she’s a newbie. Well, why can’t
we see her doing that stuff? We’re only 3 episodes in, and I’m already starting
to tire of seeing that radio tower. Maybe she’ll come into her own later on,
but as it stands right now, she’s easily the least interesting character.
I’m not sure if I mentioned this before,
but whoever did the character designs for the girls did an excellent job. One
of the difficult parts of magical girl anime is differentiating the characters
in ways beyond just a different hair colour. Despite Magical Girl Raising
Project’s frankly enormous cast (some of which we’ve barely seen yet, if at all),
each girl stands out with a unique outfit that makes you instantly be able to
tell her out from a group. Characters like Tama, La Pucelle, and Top Speed are
already pretty iconic for this series in the way the characters from Madoka
Magica have become synonymous with their series.
Magical Girl Raising Project just
keeps getting better and better. It’s managed to break the expectations of a
Madoka rip-off, and is succeeding as its own thing. My one concern is that this
show may be too crowded for its own good. There are so many characters, many of
them only having a handful of lines so far, that it might not have as much
impact if one of them gets axed. Would we really miss the music girl or the
gunslinger? Probably not. Still, what we have so far has been excellent, and
has gone far beyond my initial expectations.
FINAL SCORE
9/10
Amazing
