Girls’ Last Tour Episode 1 Review

The cutest nuclear winter ever!
(This review contains spoilers!)

I’m tired of post-apocalyptic stuff…unless it’s willing to do something new and different with the genre. While I hope I never have to sit through another round of generic stock characters fighting their way through a grim brown wasteland, if the show or movie or whatever is willing to think outside the box and try something a little more unique with its apocalypse, I’m down to give it a try.

While Girls’ Last Tour isn’t the most original thing you’ll ever watch, it separates itself from the crowd by utilizing some very unique character designs on its main duo, as well as a much more charming and relaxed atmosphere than is usually found in these types of things.

The world is in a post-war nuclear winter, but that isn’t stopping our two heroines from trekking across the wasteland in an adorable little jalopy. Chito is a no-nonsense hard worker that strives to keep going and survive at every opportunity, and Yuuri is a bit of a doofus who enjoys eating more than anything. They have very simple characteristics at first glance, but their rapport really gives them an extra dimension. They have a lot of cute and funny moments together, especially when Chito finally gets tired of Yuuri messing with her.

Everything we need to know about the backstory of the world and how it ended up like this is relayed in a short, wordless flashback, which is especially thankful for me after having to watch Exposition: The Anime Re:Creators all the way through. Despite the charming nature of the characters, there’s a real somber overtone to everything, compounded by the dark colours and grim overtones to what the girls left behind.

Despite this, the fun characters and up-tempo musical score keep things from getting too grim. This first episode actually felt pretty chill and relaxed to watch, almost like a weird alternate universe K-On where, instead of playing music, the characters are scavenging for food and weapons. I was invested the entire time I was watching, despite the slower pace of the show.

If this pilot is anything to go by, Girls’ Last Tour looks like it’s going to be a complete reverse of School-Live: a slice-of-life show disguised as a post-apocalyptic story. And you know what? It actually works, thanks to the delightful duo we’re travelling with and the beautiful wasteland they’re stuck in. One has to wonder if an overarching plot will start up (one has to wonder if Chi has a goal other than just to survive), but for now I really enjoyed this first episode. It looks like this is another anime that’s flying somewhat under the radar this season, so I heartily recommend checking this one out.

FINAL SCORE
8/10

Great
