Timeless Review: “The War to End All Wars”

It’s alive!!!
(This review contains spoilers!)

Ah, Timeless. It’s been a while since I talked about this show. Over a year, in fact. Since the first season wrapped up in February of last year we fans got a scare akin to the sort of stuff the Time Team had to deal with every week: the show getting cancelled! Aaaaaahhh!

But through some lucky break the show was given a second chance, and although we had to wait extra to get there, Season 2 was on its way with the promise of being better than ever. Hooray!

Even as one of this show’s biggest pushers on Twitter and the like, I had to admit I was going in with low expectations. A show that had literally been brought back from the dead was surely not going to have the budget and writing staff that made the first season such a thrill, right?

Wrong! This episode was quick to remind me of why I fell in love with the show in the first place, as well as establish the new tone for the season going forth. It’s a blast in the past, and it’s exactly what patient fans have been hoping for.

Picking up right where we left off, Lucy has gone missing after getting that stunning revelation from her mom, and Mason Industries has been destroyed. The only survivors are (here’s a big shock) the main characters, as they now all work together in an underground base trying to get the Lifeboat operational again to keep hunting down Rittenhouse and find Lucy.

Meanwhile, Lucy is playing sleeper agent with her mom and Emma, both of them Rittenhouse agents, as they travel back to WWI to find a mysterious man who they have to bring back to present day. It’s a race against time as Wyatt and Rufus follow close behind and try to save the day and set things right.

One thing that’s immediately apparent is the darker nature of this episode alone when compared to Season 1. Don’t get me wrong, the show could get grim at times, but here they take full advantage of the 10:00 PM timeslot. Early on in the episode Lucy, the main heroine of the show, kills an innocent man in cold blood just to keep her mom thinking she’s working with her. That’s pretty crazy, even for this show, but it works really well for what this season is clearly trying to go for.

It turns out that Rittenhouse agents are hanging out all over the place in WWI, as Wyatt finds a soldier with a modern day phone in his pocket, and Lucy’s mom’s target is apparently a big deal in the organization. Despite managing to take down a lot of the facades of Rittenhouse at the end of last season, it looks like the rest of them are more akin to how Flynn found Emma at the end of last season, hiding in history waiting to return to action.

Speaking of Flynn, the episode ends with Agent Christopher leaving the new base and meeting with him in his jail cell, where he says he’ll only speak to Lucy. While Rittenhouse is undeniably going to be the main villain going forward, you have to wonder what Flynn’s got up his belt this season. He’s like the Grant Ward of Timeless. You have no idea what to expect from him and you absolutely don’t trust him, but he’s such a great bad guy that it’s awesome to have him around.

What a premiere this was. This episode wastes no time in getting you right back into the action (I did appreciate the full season recap before the episode started though, as I haven’t seen this show in a year), reuniting you with the characters and showing you how this season’s going to be different. I’m more than happy to welcome the Time Team back with open arms. Here’s to a fantastic season!

I’m not calling myself a #Clockblocker though. I’m fine as just a big fan, thanks.
