It’s main event time!
(This review contains
spoilers!)
Last week’s premiere was very
promising, creating a new world for the agents to explore as well as a ton of
new dangers and secrets. With how much I enjoyed the premiere I was worried the
follow-up wouldn’t be quite as good, but I’m happy to be proven wrong. We’re
only two episodes in and this season is looking like it might be able to top
Season 4.
The team has split up into separate groups:
Coulson, Mack and Yo-Yo are stuck working for the jerk who fixed their arm band
things, Daisy and May are on the outside gathering information, Simmons is
stuck working for Kassius, and Fitz is still off shooting a movie about
paranormal Nazis or something like that.
Coulson learns that before he died Virgil was investigating a
chunk of rock broken off Earth called “616” (*Marvel fans laugh*), and takes
the team out to investigate. Meanwhile Daisy is venturing through the station
trying to find Simmons, who’s stuck training an inhuman on how to use her
powers.
The parts with Simmons and the inhuman were easily the highlight
for me. After a fun and charming scene where she learned to use her powers, we
were immediately thrust into a Ragnarok style
area where she had to fight a massive beefcake from another planet. Ever wanted
to see a big dude beat up a little girl on live TV? No? Me either, but that’s
what we’re getting. Even crazier is how the fight ends, which is perhaps the most
violent thing we’ve seen from this show ever. It’s awesome, but how is this
show not still on at 10:00?
Meanwhile, Coulson and crew are out checking out the mysterious
rock. It turns out there’s a transmission coming not from 616, but from the
surface of the Earth. But, as we see at the end of the episode, Earth isn’t
exactly the best place for humans to be anymore. There isn’t much development
on this plot thread here, but it’s a cool starting point.
Perhaps the craziest story so far is Daisy’s. After making
her way through the station up to the highest level, she takes a page out of
Captain America’s book and beats up some fruit carrying Kree in an elevator.
But even after looking awesome doing that, she is betrayed by Deke and
delivered to Kassius in person. Considering how much Deke looks like Ward, who
wants to bet he’s Ward’s great great grandson? I know that’s impossible since
Ward didn’t have any kids, but it’d be funny.
While this episode wasn’t nearly as massive as last week’s,
it was just as good. Each story arc got enough time to itself to further the
plot in some way, and you never felt like any time was being put to waste. I
truly can’t wait to see where they go with this one.
FINAL SCORE
9/10
Amazing
